After three years, Anders Wendin, using his alias Moneybrother, made brief reappearance on the Swedish scene for two gigs at Vasateatern in Stockholm with the aim of collecting money for supporting a school in Kenya. I went to the first show, 3 February 2017, and the full gallery can be found at http://gaffa.se/galleries/gallery/60976. With the energy unleashed on stage, it feels like he has used the time away just to focus on these two concerts.
Conor Oberst, maybe best known as frontman of Bright Eyes, came to Sweden for a sold out solo show at Göta Lejon on 24 January 2017. Harmonica, piano, guitar and fantastic vocals is a great recipe for an emotional show. Full gallery at http://gaffa.se/galleries/gallery/60921.
Anso Lundin, or at least her artist persona Min Stora Sorg (My Great Sorrow), is always a treat to see. Enormously creative, it is impossible to know beforehand how her shows will be. For this one-off show at Södra teatern on 15 December 2016 she prepared with several short films playing as backdrop, a cooperation with a dancer and of course a couple of different costumes and hats. With a long experience from making music with Loosegoats, Songs of Soil and as a solo artist, it's no surprise that Christian Kjellvander's stop at Debaser Medis the 2 December 2016 is filled to the brim with great songs and guitar-playing. Kjellvander takes us to an alternate soulful universe with feelings and emotions that are so much larger than in everyday life. Full gallery at http://gaffa.se/galleries/gallery/60798.
A night with both Hurula and Les Big Byrd is bound to be great! Stockholm was in for a treat last Tuesday 29 November 2016, when Les Big Byrd opened for Hurula at Vasateatern. Both are high-energy bands playing loud, which made the clash with the velvet and chandeliers of the theatre all the more obvious, something for punks to rebel against. Full gallery of Hurula is at http://gaffa.se/galleries/gallery/60777.
Jens Lekman accomplishes a lot under small circumstances. Switching between his guitar, a sequencer and a tambourine he has no problems whatsoever to captivate a theatre full of very attentive fans. This was his first show in Stockholm for three years and it was magnificent. Full gallery at http://gaffa.se/galleries/gallery/60710.
Sweden's largest island, Gotland, is known for Ingmar Bergman, sunny summer days and peculiar rock formations known as "rauks". And of course garage rockers Pascal. Last Friday, 18 November 2016, they came to Debaser Medis for a rare show, so all fanatical fans showed up. I got a few shots of the band, with the full gallery at http://gaffa.se/galleries/gallery/60691.
Can artists playing alternative rock become classics? If that's the case, Dinosaur Jr. is definitely one of those groups. However, I guess they don't really care, they just get up on stage and play. I had the opportunity to see their gig at Debaser Medis on 8 November 2016. Full gallery at http://gaffa.se/galleries/gallery/60633 and also a review.
With autumn comes concert season, so it will be hectic with shows for a couple of weeks. Last Friday, 4 November, saw an intimate show at Debaser Strand with charismatic Swede Kristian Anttila. He singlehandedly won over the audience with only an acoustic guitar and lots of humor! Full gallery at http://gaffa.se/galleries/gallery/60603.
In October, I covered shows by Angel Olsen (22 October) and Black Mountain (27 October) at the same venue. The full galleries can be found at http://gaffa.se/galleries/gallery/60491 and http://gaffa.se/galleries/gallery/60562 respectively.
One of the exciting things about photographing concerts is the unexpected experiences. When I signed up to photograph Sunn o))) I was aware of their reputation as a loud band, but I didn't really understand just how loud... 120 decibel is just a number until you feel the vibrations in your body, and although I wore protection for my ears it still took two days for my hearing to be back to normal.
